2021 closes out with the majority of the NZ top firms’ hires being overseas returnees

As we eased back into the office for 2022, Insource looked back at the last quarter of 2021.  Specifically, the new hires into New Zealand’s top six firms.[1]

The largest source for talent was overseas (10), which is a little surprising considering the difficulty of MIQ slots.  Although it’s likely these hires were in the planning stages for a while, with six of them alumni returning to previous employers.

NZ’s top six firms then hired from boutique/specialist firms (5), in-house (5), City firms (2), other top six firms (2) and one graduate.

It’s a nice bookend to 2021 as the most hires in the first quarter of 2021 were overseas returnees as well.  With over half of these returnees returning to their previous employers, it shows the importance of supporting your lawyers when they leave for distant shores.

We would also bet that those six alumni hires were the easiest hires for those firms in 2021.  In a short market, anything that makes hiring easier is always appreciated.  Speaking of making hiring easier, Insource was created to be a dedicated legal recruitment search and pipelining tool to help law firms bring their recruitment in-house.  Insource gives law firms complete visibility of the New Zealand legal profession so you can see where your next hire is.  If your firm is interested in hearing more or seeing the platform in action via a demo, please get in touch.
