Overseas returnees the majority of top firms hires in the first quarter of 2021

The Insource platform shows that of the 19 lawyers hired by New Zealand’s top six firms in the first quarter of 2021, 11 were returnees from overseas and of those 9 returned to their previous firm.

As the end of the first quarter of 2021, we took a quick glance at the known new hires of the top six law firms to see where they’re sourcing their talent.  Of the 19 lawyers hired by those top firms most are returnees from overseas, (London, Australia and Singapore), and of those returnees, 9 returned to their previous firm.  Overseas is by far the most common source of new hires (11 lawyers), with the second most common source being Judges’ clerks (3 lawyers), National firms (2 lawyers) and finally CBD firms, Boutique firms and Graduates (1 lawyer each).

This shows the importance of supporting lawyers when they leave your firm for distant shores, or simply move to another firm.  Because when a global pandemic hits and they want to return home, you want your firm to be where they return to.
